  39. I guess that's kinda what it sounded like, but it's not what I meant.  I meant 
  40. the hassle of having to obtain your raw footage *twice* before any editing 
  41. decisions ahve been made.  It's more of a principle thing, I guess.  There's 
  42. really no reason (other than cost) that a standard for capturing raw video to 
  43. a hard disk recorder hasn't been attempted.  Everybody has their scheme - 
  44. Avid, Media 100, NewTek's VTASC, etc...  But all of these (except for the 
  45. future Flyer box) still rely heavily on what tape format you can originally 
  46. capture to.

  48. As a small "video guy", I might be able to afford the Flyer and the computer 
  49. equipment that is necessary to build a nice little NL system.  But, BetaSP 
  50. stuff is way out of my price range, so I'm limited to either Hi8 or SVHS 
  51. quality to start with unless I want to bring a computer setup to a shoot.  
  52. Even then it's hard to juggle the controls on the Flyer as opposed to just 
  53. letting tape roll.  However, a truly portable DDR could greatly increase the 
  54. qualtiy of my final output simply because I'm not limited by the quality of my 
  55. original "capture" gear (ie video camera and deck).  Hell, I could still 
  56. output to BetaSP without ever owning or renting any BeatSP gear.  All I'd need 
  57. is a friend or a service bureau where I could hook up my Flyer to a record 
  58. deck and play back the edited piece.

  60. So no, I never meant to say that a old fashioned tape setup was better 
  61. quality-wise.  It just made more sense to take your capture medium and edit 
  62. it directly to your output medium.
